Seaweed face mask recipe (2)

A white ceramic pot with creamy carrageen seaweed spilling out of it

Enjoying a seaweed face mask is another great way to absorb the amazing nutrients of seaweed through our skin. If you’ve been on one of my seaweed foraging courses you’ll know I have a lot to say about Carrageen seaweed, and this face mask is celebrating it further!

Carrageen seaweed is also known as Irish moss and for this recipe I use Chondrus crispus and Mastocarpus stellatus seaweeds which both grow here in Cornwall and are in my pocket Seaweed foraging book.

Why use carrageen in a face mask?*

Carrageen is almost a complete food, so rich is this seaweed in nutrients from calcium to magnesium and omega 3. It also contains vitamins A, E, F, K and B12. Making a face mask from carrageen can feel deliciously silky and smooth on your skin. It also supports hydration and can help repair skin cells, supporting aging gracefully and helping treat common skin problems like eczema and psoriasis. Read more about the benefits of carrageen seaweed from the Cornish Seaweed Company – Carrageen.

*Please be aware that using the natural seaweed is different from using the processed powder extracted from carrageen. This powder has been associated with IBS and health problems.

Seaweed face mask recipe with carrageen

  • 5 grams dried carrageen seaweed
  • Hot water

Place the dried seaweed in a heatproof bowl before pouring on the boiling water and leaving to sit for 10 minutes. The natural gel in the seaweed will seep into the water. When the water has cooled down enough to place on your skin, dip your fingers into the seaweed water and rub the gel onto your face.

Relax and allow the seaweed to dry on your skin before washing off. This can take up to 20 minutes. Enjoy the feeling of rejuvenated and nourished skin. You keep the seaweed and seaweed gel for up to a week in the fridge and use again and again.
